Resource predictability drives interannual variation in migratory behavior in a long-lived bird

چکیده
Abstract There is a growing awareness that experience may play major role in migratory decisions, especially long-lived species. However, empirical support remains to date scarce. Here, we use multiyear GPS-tracking data on 28 adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls (Larus fuscus), species for which strategies typically consist of series long stopovers, assess how affects interannual variation stopover selection. We expect food source reliability should pivotal role, as it both reduces the uncertainty availability across years, and enables more efficient foraging during stopovers by reducing searching efforts. found gulls indeed developed high fidelity particular locations, strongly reduced daily distance travelled foraging. When revisiting consecutive birds used over 80% locations from previous year. Although average years was 85%, where showed site were up 60% likely be revisited compared with low fidelity. Accordingly, using reliable opportunities significantly less their than opportunities. Our results thus highlight need further deepen our understanding cognitive processes individual behavior.

متن کاملEvidence of an interannual effect of maternal immunization on the immune response of juveniles in a long-lived colonial bird.
Little is known about the maternal transfer of antibodies in natural host-parasite systems despite its possible evolutionary and ecological implications. In domestic animals, the maternal transfer of antibodies can enhance offspring survival via a temporary protection against parasites, but it can also interfere with the juvenile immune response to antigens. We tested the functional role of mat...

Background: Today, commitment to ethical behavior is one of the most important concerns of patient care and medical field. The HR managers try to improve the ethical climate in this domain by using effective strategies and practices. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the predictability of nurses' ethical behavior by HRM activities by using the public health service networks. Metho...
متن کاملTiming of initial arrival at the breeding site predicts age at first reproduction in a long-lived migratory bird.
In long-lived vertebrates, individuals generally visit potential breeding areas or populations during one or more seasons before reproducing for the first time. During these years of prospecting, they select a future breeding site, colony, or mate and improve various skills and their physical condition to meet the requirements of reproduction. One precondition of successful reproduction is arri...
